Pentair appoints Folz from VLB
Named as Director for Technology & Innovation
Pentair Food & Beverage has reached into the world of academia to drive their innovation efforts. Dr Roland Folz is leaving VLB Berlin to join Pentair at its Venlo, Netherlands headquarters at the beginning of February 2014.
Folz takes on the title of Director Technology & Innovation for Food & Beverage. He’ll be responsible for innovation, product design, solutions development, and the global R&D function for Pentair’s Food & Beverage division.
“I am delighted to welcome Roland Folz to his new position,” said Olaf Müller, Vice President Pentair Food & Beverage. “He brings significant expertise in his field and an excellent understanding of the brewing and beverage industries. I am convinced that he will bring our company forward.”
Folz can indeed draw on considerable knowledge of the brewing industry. At VLB he headed the Brewing & Beverage Science and Applications department. He and his team of engineers worked on sustainable development issues, future brewing streams and on fermentation & applied microbiological concepts.
He started his career in the brewing industry with a technical apprenticeship as a brewer & maltster at Beck’s Brewery. This culminated with his completion of his doctorate, with the thesis on the flavour stability of beer in PET bottles. Prior to joining VLB Folz had also been technical director for the Preussen Pils Brewery and plant manager for the Oettinger Group, with both roles in Germany.
Folz told Brewers’ Guardian that he’d been following developments at Pentair for the past few years and was familiar with the company and its people.
“I think it’s one of the most innovative companies we have right now,” he said. “There are a lot of cutting edge technologies and ideas. For me it’s a great chance to move to a company which is on the cutting edge of the beverage industry.”
Folz noted that he “loves” his job at VLB and will be staying in close touch with the school going forward: “For me it’s not a move away from VLB, but a move towards Pentair.”
Folz is a well-known figure in the international brewing industry. In recent months he has been named International Director for the American Society of Brewing Chemists. He is active on the board of examiners at the Institute of Brewing & Distilling, and is a member of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas and the International Society of Beverage Technologists.
