Baltika's NAB appeal: available across Kinshasa to start

Here’s a surprise: Russian brewer’s big African volumes

Ten years after it began exporting beer to African markets, Baltika Breweries is entering yet another market, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Baltika, Russia’s largest brewer by market share and part of the Carlsberg Group, is beginning with its non-alcoholic malt drink Baltika 0 Grain. It’ll be initially available to the 15 million residents of the country’s sprawling capital Kinshasa at wholesalers, retail chains and petrol station shops. The first 10,000 litres have already been shipped from St Petersburg.

Baltika Breweries export sales and intercompany supplies director Elena Volgusheva noted that Baltika brands are now available in 75 countries worldwide, making it the Russian leader in exports.

She added, “We plan to move beyond and to expand our reach annually, introducing people around the world to our best varieties.”

Besides the DRC, Baltika Breweries is doing business in numerous African countries. It also distributes beer in the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania. It’s the last that is its largest market, with 3,000 hectolitres shipped to Tanzania during the first quarter of 2017.

The continent now accounts for 10% of all of Baltika’s export volumes, after excluding all exports to former Soviet republics. In addition to Baltika 0, other brand extensions that are finding favour are standard lager Baltika 3, premium lager Baltika 7, strong lager Baltika 9, and dark beer Baltika 6.
