Perennial favourite IPA pushed aside by cloudy beers

The latest additions to the ever-expanding categorisation of American craft beer styles features a trio of hazy beer styles that have rocketed to the top of the ratings.

Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale, Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale, and Juicy or Hazy Imperial or Double India Pale Ale were judged and awarded medals for the first time at this weekend’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. 

As raked by competition entries, juicy or hazy IPA came out tops with 391. (The category’s gold was taken home by Foiken Haze from Eris Brewery ad Cider House, Chicago, IL.

More than ascending to the top of the style pyramid the new emphasis pushed perpetual favourite American-Style India Pale Ale out of the top spot that it occupied for more than a decade and a half. (For 2018 it numbered 331 entries; for 2017 it was number one with 408 entries. It had been the most hotly contested category at the GABF since 2002.)

There were 131 entries in the Juicy or Hazy Pale Ale competition and 161 entries in the Juicy or Hazy Double IPA competition.

The top five most categories as ranked by number of entries at this year’s GABF were as follows:

391 - Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale 

311 - American-Style India Pale Ale

177 - Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout

170 - American-Style Pale Ale

162 - Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer

There was an average of 82 entries per beer style category. 

NOTES: In all there were 8,496 entries plus 101 Pro-Am and 49 collaboration entries competing in this year’s Great American Beer Festival. These were submitted from 2,404 American breweries, from 49 states and Washington, DC. (Mississippi was the exception.)
