Multinational and craft brewer partner once more

Carlsberg and Brooklyn Brewery are adding a chapter to their suddenly burgeoning joint venture, this week announcing plans for a brewery in Lithuania.

The brewery is to be installed at the Švyturys Brewery in Klaipéda, one of two breweries operated in the country by wholly owned Carlsberg unit Švyturys-Utenos Alus. Its brewers are to partner with those from Brooklyn to create small batch and experimental beers.

The first beers of the collaboration are expected to come to market at the end of this year, following commissioning of the new brewery.

Švyturys-Utenos Alus chief executive officer Rolandas Viršilas noted that the habits of Lithuanian beer drinkers have been changing in favour of more diverse flavours.

He said, “The partnership with Brooklyn Brewery will allow us to satisfy this growing demand by offering numerous new, exclusive and experimental beers.”

The capacity of the new brewhouse was not announced. Švyturys-Utenos Alus is the Lithuanian market leader with a 41% share of beer sales.

The Lithuanian initiative is the third time in the last month that Carlsberg and Brooklyn have announced new joint ventures. In June plans were announced for the brewing of a one-off craft beer, HK YAU, for the Hong Kong market. Last week Carlsberg UK acquired London Fields Brewery and will operate it with Brooklyn.
