Coopers reports record sales
An 4.4% increase over '14 in declining market
Australian brewer Coopers has reported a record 2015 with sales of 807,000 hectolitres, an increase of 4.4% over the previous year. It’s a feat made all the more impressive in the context of the continuing long term decline of the Aussie beer market.
Leading the way was Coopers Original Pale Ale, with national sales rising 3.2% during the year. Pale Ale now accounts for 52% of Coopers’ total beer sales.
Shooting up was Mild Ale 3.5% which recorded a 13.7% in sales during 2015, pushing its way into third place in the Coopers’ brand portfolio. Second-ranked Sparkling Ale had its sales increase by 1.8%.
Coopers managing director Dr Tim Cooper said that his company now claims five per cent of the Australian beer market.
“While Australia’s beer consumption has fallen almost 10% in the past six years, despite a growing population, Coopers’ sales have been on a solid growth trajectory for the past 22 years.”
Coopers traditionally brewed ales made up almost 80% of sales. The balance comes from the distribution of a portfolio of international brands. Dr Cooper cited the performance of Japanese lager Sapporo, with sales up by 50% during the year.
“This result has been achieved by growing distribution of Sapporo through different channels aided by the appointment of a beer ambassador who has been working strongly in the Asian restaurant trade.”
Carlsberg and Kronenbourg products were also said to have performed strongly during the year with sales rising by seven per cent. A mid-strength version of Carlsberg, 3.5% abv, is to be released next month.
An agreement with US craft brewer Brooklyn Brewing came into effect late in 2015 and as such only had a minor impact on Cooper’s results.
Coopers’ home state of South Australia accounted for 24% of its total volumes sold.
