Brewmaster Peter Wiems taps ceremonial firkin at opening

Guinness Blonde to be brewed in 100hl plant in Maryland

Diageo Beer Company USA cut the ribbon this month on a $90 million brownfield brewery, located in the east coast state of Maryland.

Dubbed the Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House, it boasts two breweries, a 100 barrel brewery dedicated to production of Guinness Blonde for national distribution; and a 10 barrel brewery that is for small batch experimental beers. As the brewery’s name suggests, barrel-aged beers will be part of the offer.

Diageo global chief sales officer Tom Day, who’s also chairman of Diageo Beer Company USA, was understandably ecstatic about the new brewery.

“I can’t wait to see people enjoying the fantastic beer our brewers have made in this historic and beautiful building,” he said. “I’m proud that we have created something special and quintessentially Guinness here in Maryland.”

The brewing team is led by brewmaster Peter Wiens and head brewer Hollie Stephenson. The brewery’s restaurant, headed by executive chef Sam Anderson, is slated to open later this year.

Open Gate is said to incorporate measures to reduce overall electrical usage and water consumption. Recycled elements and low volatile organic compound materials have been used to accent the building.

Open Gate is being promoted as the first US-based brewery to brew Guinness in 60 years but Diageo's presence in the country is far more recent than that. It was manufacturing malternative proucts up to the mid 2000s in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, with this plant sold to Boston Beer.in 2007.

Guinness Draught, Extra Stout and Foreign Extra Stout for the American market will continue to be brewed at St James’s Gate in Dublin.

Diageo Beer Company USA (formerly Diageo Guinness USA) is the US beer and flavoured malt beverage business of Diageo.
