Combined capacity now 8.0 million hectolitres

Retains three breweries, two malthouses in Turkey

Anadolu Efes has ceased production at its brewery in the Merter district of Istanbul, as of 22nd May, citing as reasons for closure both its production efficiency strategy and the environmental and social impacts of the brewery’s city centre location.

The move reduces Efes’ brewing capacity in Turkey by 15% to 8.0 million hectolitres, with Merter’s annual capacity approximately 1.4 – 1.5mhl. The future of the site has yet to be determined.

Efes retains three breweries in Turkey, in Adana, Ankara and Izmir, as well as two malthouses and a hop processing facility. Employees at Merter were to be offered vacant positions at the other Efes’ breweries, or, in the absence of suitable opportunities, undergo redundancy.

In 2016 Efes’ domestic beer volumes totalled 6.0 million hectolitres, down 9.9% from the previous year.

For 2017 Anadolu Efes is projecting a “flattish” performance in a “flattish market.” First quarter 2017 domestic volumes totalled 1.2 million hectolitres, down 3.6% from the same quarter in 2016. Of this volume 200,000hl is destined for export markets.
