Nelson: from batch to continuous publishing

Magazine to cease publication in print

Brewers’ Guardian, the international brewing industry magazine, is moving to an on-line presence only, ceasing publication of its print title with immediate effect.

The magazine’s website, www.brewersguardian.com, is to be further developed as a resource for the global brewing community, with additions of features, columnists and other enhancements.

Publisher and Editor Larry Nelson commented, “We’re moving with the times. It is far more efficient and immediate to be able to communicate with our global audience electronically rather than by print.

“It is undeniably difficult to bring to an end the hard copy existence of such a proud title, one which boasts an enviable heritage. But there’s a transition in brewing technology at the moment which is analogous with what we’re undertaking. Brewers’ Guardian is moving from ‘batch’ publishing to ‘continuous’ publishing.

“Web-only publishing is an opportunity to consider afresh how we process news regarding the industry, and how we can add value in terms of features and opinion. That said, our core interests remain intact: production and marketing innovation, corporate social sustainability and environmental performance, and the personalities and business of beer and brewing.”

Brewers’ Guardian was first published in London on 30th January 1871, as a fortnightly publication “devoted to the protection to Brewers’ interests in Licensing, Legal and Parliamentary Matters.” One of its first reports was on a visit by Louis Pasteur to the laboratories of Whitbread brewery in London in 1871.

The magazine has undergone numerous transitions over the decades. Since the beginning of 2010 it has been published six times annually. The last print issue was November-December 2011, drawing to a close 140 years in print.

Brewers’ Guardian is published by Advantage Publishing Ltd, a specialist in business-to-business titles covering the global brewing industry. The company is located in Reigate, Surrey, United Kingdom.
