O'Hara: enjoyed the academic challenge

Greene King’s 28YO gains IBD qualification

Greene King New Product Development brewer Ross O’Hara has become the world’s youngest Master Brewer.

O’Hara, 28, qualified for the Institute of Brewing and Distilling’s Master Brewer qualification by studying for four years alongside his full time job developing new products for Greene King at its Westgate Brewery.

O’Hara has been responsible for the development of new brands including Greene King’s Heritage range, Yardbird Pale Ale and Gluten Free Old Speckled Hen. He also oversees Greene King’s apprentice brewers at its London microbrewery, Craft Academy.

“It’s been a lot of work to reach this level but well worth it. I’ve enjoyed the challenge and love to continue to develop my knowledge,” said O’Hara.

“I had no idea I was the youngest doing the course. Greene King has been hugely supportive of me studying for the qualification, encouraging me to run with ideas and draw on the heritage of the brewery to develop interesting new beers.”

Greene King head of operations David Carr commended O’Hara’s dedication and commitment to becoming a qualified Master Brewer.

“His enthusiasm shines through particularly when he is training our apprentice brewers, developing a new recipe or diving industry initiatives such as the new Brewing Apprenticeship.”

Master Brewer is the IBD’s highest level of qualification. Currently there are 578 qualified Master Brewers worldwide. The qualification is made up of five modules: Raw Materials and Wort Production, Fermentation and Beer Processing, Packaging of Beer, Management and Regulatory Compliance and a final Practical Project.

National British brewer and pub group Greene King is headquartered in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. It operates two industrial scale ale breweries, Westgate in Bury St Edmunds and Dunbar in Scotland. Old Speckled Hen is the number one premium ale in the UK.
