Dr Smart: founder of U Notts' brewing school

Dr Katherine Smart to fill Barry Axcell's shoes

SABMiller has reached outside the talent pool of its production network for its new chief brewer, selecting an academic, one familiar with the brewing research requirements of the multinational.

Dr Katherine Smart, the SABMiller Professor of Brewing Science and head of the University of Nottingham’s School of Biosciences, takes over the role from Professor Barry Axcell from the beginning of June. Axcell, who has worked 35 years with the company, is to retire at the end of July.

Tony van Kralingen, SABMiller’s director of supply chain and human resources, described Smart as an “outstanding talent” boasting a wealth of experience. “Over the last seven years we have built a valuable relationship with her and the University of Nottingham, which has helped keep us at the forefront of brewing innovation and technology.”

Dr Smart founded the brewing science programme at Nottingham, which offers research programs in malting, yeast genomics, fermentation and flavour. She worked with Axcell to develop the school’s MSc in Brewing Science.#

Van Kralingen offered his personal appreciation for Axcell’s considerable contributions. “Barry has instilled a culture of bring excellence at SABMiller and his passion and professionalism serves as a role model for all brewers. I am pleased that Barry has agreed to continue to provide consulting services to SABMiller.”
