'Ditch bubbly for beer,' candidates urged

Independent brewers in election fever marketing bid

British brewers are hoping to muscle in on champagne makers’ act by supplying cask ale as the victory tipple to the winners of next month’s general election.

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) today wrote to some 2,300 parliamentary candidates offering to supply casks of local beer for the post-ballot celebrations following the May 6th general election.

“It seems completely wrong for new MPs to be marking a very British occasion with sparkling wine shipped in from France when there’s almost certainly at least one independent brewer in their constituency,” said SIBA chairman Keith Bott.

“Local brewers produce wonderful, craft beers from local, natural ingredients, using minimal food miles. They employ local people and make a valuable contribution to their local economy.”
